Public transportation is crucial in our lives, but it often comes with challenges. In Germany, nearly every city has an app for local route queries, and in many places, tickets can only be purchased through the local public transportation app rather than the DB Navigator.

However, when using these apps, we frequently encounter issues such as difficulty finding information or being unable to quickly complete ticket purchases, causing us to miss one bus after another. We have taken the example of the local public transportation app "DING" in Ulm for a redesign. The aim is to create a seamless and user-friendly experience for passengers in Ulm.

What problems have been encountered with DING ?

The DING app has been categorized according to the Kano Model into basic features, performance features, excitement features, feedback features, and useless features. These features have been carefully compiled. Additionally, during the analysis of our competitors, we discovered other important functionalities such as live tracking, which had a significant impact on enhancing the app experience. By applying the design filter, we were able to clarify the goals of the app redesign: user-friendly, simple, and transport-oriented, which played a crucial role in shaping our features during development.

Feature

Filter Options

Users can customize walking or cycling speed and set a maximum walking distance. Based on specific preferences, the app selects and displays routes accordingly, allowing users to save them as their mobile profiles. This helps save time in route searches and enables quicker access to optimal results.

Travel status and transfer information

By highlighting the current location and status in blue, users can intuitively identify their present position and the corresponding station, quickly locating where they are. Additionally, Ulm Herum will display the transfer vehicles at different bus stops and orientation maps for the stations.

Ticket overview and purchase

The ticket type and the number of passengers are displayed simultaneously on a dedicated page. Users can confirm their ticket purchase intention by sliding sliders. Introducing this change aims to reduce the likelihood of unintentional ticket purchases.

Visual design language

The main color scheme of the application adopts the colors of the Ulm coat of arms (Das Ulmer Wappen) – predominantly black and white – and incorporates the blue color from the Ulm public transportation system. This aligns with the city's image, and the overall style employs user-friendly rounded corner designs for the user interface.

API prototype

As an extension, we aim to programmatically create maps online by utilizing the Mapbox Direction API and Mapbox GL JS. This will enable us to explore programming solutions for search functionalities and route rendering.
